Dark Echoes
2nd Place winner, Student Multimedia Competition
2013 Captivate Tech Conference Dark Echoes is an experimental game based around a blind protagonist who navigates by sound. All sound is represented visually to the human player, with parts of the environment lighting up as the player becomes aware of them. This is an early trailer and gameplay video. The game is made in the Unity engine. As Design Lead for the Dark Echoes project my contributions include:
We tried everything from a top-down view (too abstract) to dozens of moving colored lights (too performance intensive). We finally settled on a more immersive over-the-shoulder perspective while putting a performance friendly animated texture on objects that let them light up as the player approached. We met our technical requirements and our core gameplay was more immediately accessible. |
